The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) on January 01, 2026, issued directions to Municipal Bodies for Preventing Open Waste Burning and Controlling Air Pollution.
Due to worsening air quality across cities and towns, authorities have directed municipal bodies to take urgent action against key pollution sources such as solid waste burning, vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and construction dust. Particular concern has been raised over open burning of unsegregated municipal waste—including tyres, plastics, painted materials, and e-waste—which releases toxic pollutants like particulate matter, dioxins, and furans, posing serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
To ensure compliance with environmental regulations, Municipal Corporations have been instructed to strictly prohibit the burning of mixed waste in public places, dump yards, streets, and vacant lands, especially during the Bhogi festival period. They are also required to undertake extensive public awareness campaigns through multiple outreach channels to inform citizens about the environmental and health hazards associated with such practices and promote responsible waste management.
